‘Locals Only’ takes us back to 1970’s Apartheid South Africa, drawing on Harris’ own childhood there, to tell a short story of innocence lost.

Beautiful cinematography juxtaposed with the ominousness of the environment in which it is set and the naivety of the protagonist, the film explores privilege and racism; there, then, here, now.

‘I set the film in Cape Town in the 70’s, but I wanted the piece to have a timelessness. You could easily tell the same story today, here in America. I ask how far we’ve come, and what lessons we have learned?’

Premiering this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, Locals Only has been praised as “infusing affective drama with dreamy youthful energy, Brent Harris crafts an uncommonly sharp explosion of innocence and complicity.”

After a long and celebrated career as a commercial director, ‘Locals Only’ marks Harris’ debut as a narrative filmmaker. It was a co-production between SKUNK and Egg Films, produced by Harris’ long-time collaborator, Jon Ronbeck and shot by acclaimed cinematographer, Antonio Paladino.
